Not What I Call Bonk Wave Volume 003?

Hi folks,

While we're making a lot of noise about the remix album and getting everyone's attention, I wonder if this is a good time to put out a call for submissions for the next "Not What I Call Bonk Wave" release?

@AxWax had the idea for an 'unplugged' album, so we could widen the range of musical styles even further than we had on the last release.

I wondered about a two-disk release:

Volume 003 part 1: Bonked
Volume 003 part 2: Unbonked

- this might also help with the number of submissions, as we ended up with two whole disks worth last time.

I'm thinking the submission deadline would be a way off - e.g. September perhaps?

What do people think?

Are we talking 2024?  :P

Ok, I'll try to speed up my workflow a little for the next one, so September sounds good!

It gives us a date to strive for, which is good, with holidays coming up and all.

I guess the unbonked is for more acoustic, non-electronic stuff?

AxWax

Yeah, as there is quite an electronic bias atm I'd like to nurture acoustic and electric Bonk Wave (Roots Bonk Wave?)

Johann did some acoustic live bonking on his piano strings (sadly it seems to be deleted from Masto),
there is a couple of versions of guitarsophist's https://soundcloud.com/guitarsophist/bonk-not-bonk

and I tried my hands at an acoustic version of the Bonksmas tune: https://chaos.social/@axwax/111638499387185571

I really loved having real glockenspiel, bass, piano and recorder on the Bonkwave Allstars tracks and all the collaborations from that and there is so much musical talent out there that we should tap into more!

September seems like a good idea to me as far as time for the next release. Doing a double disc release should be good too. It will help make sure there is plenty of room for folks to have their music included.

I like the idea of "Bonked" and "Unbonked" for themes to go with Electronic and Acoustic styles respectively.

I think for my track I would go in a direction of mixing the two. On previous tracks of my own it has been fun to start with sampling my own playing of an acoustic instrument and turn that into something. That might be fun to do again for this.

I really like this idea of having an electro and acoustic double bonk.

I am going to be incredibly busy until Septemberish with no chance of doing any music. But, if the submission date was the end of September I probably could make it.

Or... are we going to have the chance to contribute after the 'official' submission date like for the remix album?

My instinct is to have a firm cutoff for an official volume release.. last time there were so many entries it took Yoniden a while to put together the playing order etc and it'll potentially throw things out if we randomly stick new tracks on the end

But I'm open to opinion...

End of September deadline sounds fine to me if everyone else is happy with it, gives plenty of time to get the word out.

AxWax

I agree that the playing order would really benefit from having all the tracks available at the same time.

Saying that, could there possibly be 2 deadlines, one normal one and an earlier one for people with ADHD?

Asking for a friend...

bonkey13

Chances are, whatever the deadline is, I won't get around to doing anything until a couple of weeks before it. So personally I don't mind if we have an August deadline or September!!

Should we have a poll?

yonder

Yeah fair enough, a firm deadline and a fixed final tracklist for the main compilations does sound sensible. And being a bit looser with remixes or Bonk side projects also feels right, at least to me.

If people do come up with bonky tracks between volumes we can always do ad hoc singles or EPs, like the BonkWave Allstars releases..

Good point, never thought of that!

Is it too late to join in on 003? I have been planning to extend/edit/explore my electronic nocturnes. I think I may be slightly more of the electronic/ambient sort of thing.

Hell no. You're right on time. The deadline at the moment is somewhere in September, so plenty of time to dish up a nice bonky track for the compilation.

I may or may not have something lined up and ready to go that I could slot in for volume 3, it was originally made last year for a project that fell apart prior to release, so it never actually reached the public. I've been working on it a little since then, and I like how it sounds much more.

fantastic! let some instrumentalist bonk shine, I wanna know what that sounds like! I only make EBM (Electronic Bonk Music) because it's up my alley, I'd love to hear what some of the newcomers will make  ;D
I make big crunchy noises for your heart to give out to.
